Request for Proposals
To support ongoing group wellness, emotional support, and human development, AORTA is looking to hire an individual or small team (two or more people) of contractor/s to provide coaching, and team communications support.
This is a one-year contract, with the hope of extending if the experience is positive for everyone.
Background
AORTA worker owners have had the experience of going through periods of challenging dynamics regarding interpersonal communication and conflict; as well as stress and secondary trauma from the emotional intensity of working with clients on addressing racism, classism, sexism, and other forms of oppression.
We are seeking a supportive, experienced coach or team of coaches to help us process challenging emotions that arise at work; remain accountable to our agreements about conflict and group accountability; support us to communicate directly and constructively in challenging moments; offer reflection or intervention in harmful patterns; and mediate conflict when necessary.
This is a remote work-from-home position. We prefer the person we hire to be located in NY, PA, MA, VT, NC, LA, MN, CA, and OR, but are open to other locations within the U.S.. Work hours are flexible, with occasional requests to travel to in-person retreats.
We all currently are engaged in political work outside of our business that helps to inform, grow, and challenge AORTA as an organization. We want to bring on people who are similarly engaged in their communities and movements. Please note that external-facing facilitating and consulting are not part of this role; HR experience and/or HR competencies are a must.

More about AORTA:
AORTA is a worker-owned cooperative devoted to strengthening movements for social justice and a solidarity economy. We work as consultants and facilitators to expand the capacity of cooperative, collective, and community-based projects through education, training, and planning. We were founded in 2010, and incorporated as a worker-owned cooperative in 2014.
Our work ranges from one-off trainings and workshops to long-term consulting processes focused on supporting our clients with everything from policy development to strategic planning to anti-oppressive organizational transformation.
AORTA is currently made up of 13 workers (4 of whom are founders) distributed across the U.S. We’ve conducted two hiring processes; in 2015, we brought on 3 new worker-owner candidates (now worker-owners), and in mid-2018 we brought on 5 new worker owner candidates. Our work and client base has continued to grow.
As members of a cooperative, we are not just workers or coworkers, but are committed to supporting each other and other cooperatives. AORTA is more than a job; it is a project that we are passionate about, a support system, and a space to enact and build our politics and our vision for the world and the movements we want to see.
