The idea behind a board assessment matrix is that you can create one for your organization that helps to identify the skills you need collectively as a board to feel ready and able to govern the organization. This included sample matrix contains sample items– you may want to change them to fit your organization’s specific needs. After identifying your needed skills, your board (or a recruitment team) assess how important it is to have each of those skills represented on your board, from 1 to 5.
Once your matrix is completed, you can begin to prepare for board recruitment by asking each board member to assess themselves, from 1 (low experience) to 5 (lots of experience) for each of the items. This can help you identify which skills may be a priority for your board in each particular round of recruitment.
